In the pre-dawn hours of May 18, 2005, Nancy Lewis began her day like any other. At approximately 3:45 a.m., the 46-year-old left her home on Princeton Avenue in southwest Birmingham, Alabama, to make her way to work. For seven years, she had been a dedicated cook at Children's Hospital, often arriving well before her scheduled 5:00 a.m. shift.
