Summary based on the NamUs case record (MP6046) and 9 other sources
Abigail Estrada, a 13-year-old from Harlingen, Texas, was last seen on June 16, 2007. On that day, she left her home with her 16-year-old boyfriend, Ruben Torres Jr., and was never heard from again. Her family found it suspicious that Abigail would leave wearing slippers and without taking any personal belongings, leading them to believe she did not run away. Abigail’s parents were aware of her relationship with Ruben and had allowed it, as had Ruben’s family.

In August 2007, Torres was charged with capital murder in connection with Abigail’s disappearance, though the charge was dropped later due to a lack of evidence. In 2015, Torres was charged again with her murder. During his trial in 2017, a witness testified that Torres had confessed to killing Abigail because she had informed the police about his involvement in a drive-by shooting. After a brief trial, Torres pled guilty to the murder and was sentenced to 18 years in prison.

Although Torres was convicted, Abigail’s body has never been found, and her case remains open. Authorities suspect foul play, and the search for her continues in hopes of providing closure for her family.
