In the early morning hours of November 2, 2007, 18-year-old college freshman Justin Gaines vanished after a night out at a popular nightclub in Duluth, Georgia. He was last seen on surveillance video at the club around 1:30 a.m.
He was wearing a gray Abercrombie long-sleeved shirt, ripped blue jeans, and was known to wear a diamond stud earring. Without his car or wallet, Justin began making a series of calls to friends trying to find a ride home to Snellville, but no one was able to pick him up. The last known use of his cell phone was shortly before 2:00 a.m. in the vicinity of the club. After that, his phone went silent, and Justin was never heard from or seen again.
The initial days of the investigation were challenging, as Justin was not reported missing for three days, giving investigators a late start. The Gwinnett County Police Department faced difficulties from the outset; with roughly 3,000 patrons at the club that night, there were many potential witnesses, yet little concrete information surfaced. Early in the investigation, some of Justin's associates were reportedly uncooperative, possibly out of fear of getting into trouble regarding underage drinking. Despite this, police did not initially suspect his friends were involved. In 2011, a career criminal named Dustin Dylan Glass implicated himself and another man, Martin Leonard Wilkie, in Justin's death. Glass claimed they had assaulted and shot Justin, then disposed of his body. His mother also claimed to have helped, leading investigators to a well on a property in Walton County, but an extensive search yielded nothing, and she was later charged with making false statements. Wilkie was charged with concealing a death, but the charges were later dropped. Other tips pointed to his body being dumped in Lake Lanier or in other wells in the area, but searches of these locations have not led to his recovery.
