Toni Sharpless, a 29-year-old nurse and single mother from Downingtown, Pennsylvania, disappeared in the early morning hours of August 23, 2009. The night before, she had arranged for her parents to look after her daughter so she could go out with a friend, Crystal Johns. The two women first went to a nightclub in King of Prussia before heading to a party at the home of then-Philadelphia 76ers player Willie Green in Lower Merion. At the party, Sharpless, who had a history of bipolar disorder and was not supposed to consume alcohol with her medication, became intoxicated. An argument with another guest led to her being asked to leave. Shortly after leaving the party with Johns in her black 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix, an argument ensued between the two friends over Sharpless's fitness to drive. A short distance from the party, Sharpless abruptly stopped the car and told Johns to get out, then drove off alone into the night. She has not been seen or heard from since. The investigation into Toni Sharpless's disappearance was met with immediate challenges. Her cell phone was turned off around 4 a.m. on the morning she vanished, and there has been no activity on her bank accounts or credit cards since. An initial theory that she may have accidentally driven her car into the nearby Schuylkill River was explored, but searches of the river yielded no evidence. A significant but ultimately frustrating lead emerged two weeks after her disappearance when her car's license plate was recorded by an automated license plate reader in Camden, New Jersey. By the time authorities in Pennsylvania were notified and able to investigate, several days had passed, and the vehicle could not be located. Over the years, there have been unconfirmed sightings of Sharpless in areas of Pennsylvania and New Jersey known for drug activity and prostitution, leading her family's private investigator to believe she may have been a victim of human trafficking. The case took another strange turn in 2013 when a private investigator working for the family received an anonymous letter. The writer claimed to have been paid $5,000 to move Sharpless's Pontiac from New Jersey to Boston after she was allegedly killed in an altercation involving a police officer in Camden. The letter contained specific details that had not been publicly released, including Sharpless's cell phone number and the last five digits of her car's vehicle identification number, lending it a degree of credibility. However, police reportedly dismissed the letter as a hoax. Despite the passage of time and the declaration of Sharpless being legally dead, her case remains open. The disappearance of Toni Sharpless is a troubling mystery, marked by a series of perplexing clues and unanswered questions, leaving her family with no closure. The investigation has been hampered by a lack of concrete evidence, with the various theories—a tragic accident, foul play, or becoming a victim of human trafficking—all remaining speculative.
