Heriberto 'Nony' Herrera, a 40-year-old father of twin sons, was last seen in Las Vegas, Nevada, on May 14, 2010. The day he went missing was marked by personal turmoil. He had recently been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, schizoaffective disorder, and depression with psychotic features after experiencing a severe psychotic episode in April.
His wife, concerned by his increasingly erratic and aggressive behavior, left their Summerlin home with their children on the morning of May 14th. Distraught, Heriberto reported his family missing to the police and also attempted to contact his sister at her workplace. Later that day, police escorted his wife back to their residence to retrieve some belongings, at which time they saw Heriberto. He later spoke to his wife on the phone that evening, telling her he loved her and their sons. This was the last time anyone is known to have heard from him.
A month after his disappearance, on June 15, 2010, Heriberto's vehicle was discovered abandoned in a parking lot near the Mary Jane Falls trailhead on Mount Charleston, a place his family said he did not enjoy visiting. Inside the car were a packed suitcase, his medication, and a case of bottled water with one bottle missing. The discovery of his car in such an uncharacteristic location deepened the mystery surrounding his disappearance. More than a year later, in August 2011, hikers on Mount Charleston found a box containing Heriberto's financial records, cash, and numerous credit cards at a high elevation. Authorities expressed doubt that Heriberto, who had asthma and was not an experienced hiker, could have reached such a steep and difficult location on the mountain.
The investigation into Heriberto Herrera's disappearance has been complex and filled with unanswered questions.
