In the autumn of 1968, a 28-year-old woman named Verla Helen Winter disappeared from her home in Kent, Washington, leaving behind a life that included two young children. She was last seen on the night of October 13, 1968. Her husband, from whom she was separated, reported her missing on October 21, 1968. He told authorities that he had returned to their home the night she was last seen and they had an argument because she did not want him there. According to his account, he went to bed, and when he woke up the next morning, Verla was gone. It appeared she had taken her personal belongings and $400 in cash. Verla was known to be in regular contact with her family through phone calls and letters before she vanished. However, after that October night, all communication from her abruptly ended. This sudden silence was out of character and deeply concerning to her family. Her two children were left behind in the wake of her disappearance and were subsequently raised by Verla's parents in Minnesota. Physically, Verla was described as a white female with brown hair and blue eyes, standing between 5'4" and 5'5" and weighing around 105 pounds. She had a one-inch scar on her right elbow and her ears were pierced. Years passed with no sign of Verla or any credible information about her whereabouts. The case grew cold, but in 1973, a tip from a woman in Kent prompted investigators to reopen the case. This led them to excavate a large planter box at Verla's last known residence, but the search yielded no evidence related to her disappearance. The investigation into what happened to Verla Winter has been fraught with uncertainty and a lack of leads. Her disappearance is classified as an endangered missing person case. Decades later, her case remains unsolved, a painful void for a family that lost a mother and a daughter without a trace. The circumstances surrounding her disappearance, including the argument with her estranged husband and the sudden cessation of contact with her loved ones, create a troubling overview of a woman who vanished under perplexing and suspicious circumstances.
