At the time of his disappearance, George was described as being 2'6" tall and weighing about 35 pounds.
He was wearing a red, white, and blue pullover polo shirt, either red or blue corduroy pants, and black sneakers with red stripes on the bottom. A notable characteristic was a birthmark on his left calf. George was a bright child for his age who could speak well and knew his address and the names of his family members.
Authorities believe that George was likely abducted by a non-family member. An extensive search was conducted in the aftermath of his disappearance, with police searching over 60 homes, trash cans, alleys, and abandoned buildings, and questioning nearly 200 people, but no trace of the little boy was found. A possible sighting occurred sometime after he went missing at St. Martins Church, located in the 30 block of North Fulton Avenue. An employee at the church reported that an elderly African American woman with white hair, estimated to be around 70 years old, came in with a little boy seeking food assistance. When asked the boy's name, the woman hesitated before the child himself said, "My name is George." The woman, who gave her last name as Williams, claimed the boy was her deceased daughter's son and provided a fictitious address before leaving. Investigators followed up on this lead by checking welfare rolls for anyone matching the woman's description with the last name Williams, but their efforts were fruitless.
Decades have passed since George Barksdale was last seen, and his case remains unsolved. His family has continued to search for answers, with his brother successfully advocating for the case to be reopened in 2006. The disappearance of a young, articulate child from the steps of a church in his own neighborhood is a heart-wrenching mystery.
