On a crisp autumn day, the last day of October in 1969, 16-year-old Patricia "Patty" Spencer disappeared from her hometown of Oscoda, Michigan. It was Halloween, a day that should have been filled with the excitement of a homecoming football game and evening parties. Patricia, a student at Oscoda High School, was last seen with a schoolmate, 15-year-old Pamela Hobley. Though not considered close friends, the two girls were seen walking together away from the school that afternoon. Patricia was wearing a brown pullover sweater with a matching brown and tan tweed or plaid skirt, and brown shoes with a thick heel. She also had on a grey and green plaid jacket. Notably, she did not have her glasses with her when she went missing. The girls did not have purses or any form of identification with them. Initially, law enforcement treated the disappearance as a case of two runaway teenagers, a theory that was quickly disputed by their families. Weeks turned into months, and with no word from either girl, the possibility of them having run off, perhaps to Flint, Michigan, seemed less and less likely. The fact that they left without personal belongings, such as purses or identification, further undermined the runaway theory. A witness later came forward stating they had given the two girls a ride to downtown Oscoda on the day they vanished, which is the last known confirmed sighting. From that point, the trail of Patricia Spencer and Pamela Hobley grew cold. Foul play is now suspected in their disappearance. Over the many decades that have passed, the case has remained open, transitioning into a haunting cold case that has left a lasting impact on the small community of Oscoda. The investigation has seen various leads and theories emerge, but none have led to a resolution. In 1985, a tip suggested the girls had been murdered and buried under a barn that was a known hangout for local teenagers, but a search of the area yielded no results. In 2013, police indicated they had a person of interest, but lacked sufficient information to move forward. The enduring mystery of what happened to Patricia Spencer and Pamela Hobley serves as a painful reminder of two young lives cut short, and their families continue to hope for answers and closure. The case is a testament to the tireless efforts of law enforcement who continue to seek justice for the two girls who vanished on that fateful Halloween night.
