In the early morning hours of June 9, 1984, 22-year-old Henry "Hank" Gafforio vanished from his Port Richmond neighborhood on Staten Island, New York. He was last seen at approximately 4:00 a.m. at the Spa Lounge, where he had been until closing time. Earlier that evening, he had reportedly been denied service at another establishment called Mugs Away. Henry, who was known to be mentally disabled with a low IQ and functioned at the emotional and mental level of a 15-year-old, was wearing a red and white striped t-shirt, dark blue jeans, and white sneakers at the time of his disappearance. He was reported missing by 7:00 p.m. that evening, after he never returned to the home he shared with his parents and three brothers on Heberton Avenue. The circumstances surrounding Henry Gafforio's disappearance have led investigators to suspect foul play. A significant point of concern for law enforcement has been the potential involvement of Andre Rand, a convicted child kidnapper and suspected serial killer who was active on Staten Island during that period. Rand was a resident of the same block as the Gafforio family, and also lived near another of his suspected victims. Although it has never been definitively proven, some accounts suggest that Gafforio was seen with someone resembling Rand on the night he went missing. Rand has a documented history of preying on vulnerable individuals, and many of his suspected victims disappeared from Staten Island. Despite the passage of decades, Henry Gafforio's case remains unsolved, leaving his family and community without answers. The investigation into his disappearance has been complicated by the lack of physical evidence and the circumstantial nature of the suspected link to Andre Rand. While Rand was convicted for the kidnappings of two other children, a jury could not reach a verdict on a murder charge in one of those cases, and he has never been charged in connection with Gafforio's disappearance.
