Rex Kelly Spakes, a 32-year-old man, was last seen on May 3, 1992, while fishing off the coast of Port Aransas, Texas. On the day of his disappearance, he was fishing from his 19-foot bass boat approximately five to seven miles offshore. A boater reported having an argument with Spakes after an incident involving a snapped fishing line, which escalated to a verbal exchange with five other men in the nearby boat.
The following day, May 4, 1992, Spakes' boat was discovered washed ashore on Mustang Island. The boat had a two-foot hole in the bow, and its steering wheel was twisted with the throttle set to full. Three unused life preservers were found on board, and Spakes’ personal items and identification were located on Mustang Beach. Despite an extensive search, Spakes was never found, and foul play is suspected in his disappearance.
