On a September morning in 1993, 35-year-old James Patrick Hillis left his home in Bear Branch, Kentucky, presumably for his job at the Golden Oak Mining Company. His wife saw him leave, but he would never return home from his shift. His equipment was later found at the mine's entrance, yet there was no sign that he had ever started his workday.
