In the quiet community of Chimacum, Washington, on a summer day, July 25, 1994, 73-year-old Rose E. Eaton vanished. That morning, Rose, who was living with her adult son, was preparing to go to a dentist appointment. As they were about to leave, her son noticed some of his livestock had gotten loose and he went to secure them, leaving Rose and their German Shepherd in his car. When he returned just ten minutes later, his mother was gone. Her purse was also missing, but the dog remained in the vehicle. After a quick search of the immediate area and finding the house still locked, her son contacted the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office to report her missing. An extensive search was launched in the rural area surrounding the home. Dozens of volunteers, including specially trained Explorer Scouts, scoured the woods and surrounding landscape for two days but found no trace of Rose. A professional tracking dog was brought in and was able to follow her scent from a sweater. The dog led searchers for about a third of a mile down a dirt road to where it met with Beaver Valley Road, at which point the trail went cold. This abrupt end to the scent trail led investigators to believe that she may have gotten into a vehicle, either by accepting a ride from a passing motorist or by some other means. Rose, who suffered from dementia, was known to use public transportation or hitchhike and did not drive herself. Rose was described as a physically healthy woman for her age, despite her cognitive condition which had made her care increasingly challenging. She was last seen wearing a long, sky-blue, button-down coat, a long, light-blue dress, and blue therapeutic shoes. She also had a tan purse with her. She had a small scar on the back of her neck and another on her abdomen. In the years since her disappearance, there has been no evidence to suggest foul play, yet the complete absence of any sign of her has left her case unresolved. The leading theory remains that she accepted a ride from someone on Beaver Valley Road and was dropped off at an unknown location. With no witnesses ever coming forward and no new leads, the disappearance of Rose Eaton continues to be a perplexing mystery for her family and the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.
