On August 12, following a disagreement with his wife concerning their children, both Ernie and his wife left their shared residence. This domestic dispute marked the beginning of a sequence of events that culminated in his disappearance. Two days later, on August 14, Ernie spoke with his mother by phone.
This would be the last time any of his loved ones would hear from him. During their conversation, he expressed that he was upset, burdened by difficulties in his marriage and an upcoming court date in Johnson County. After this final contact, Ernie Joe Tate vanished, leaving behind a life and a family.
At the time he went missing, Ernie was described as a Caucasian male, standing 6 feet tall and weighing approximately 185 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes. His appearance was distinguished by several tattoos located on his upper left arm, breast, chest, left arm, left shoulder, and right hand, as well as scars on his left foot and right thigh. The stress he mentioned to his mother was related in part to a pending court appearance for his alleged involvement in a residential burglary, a charge to which he had pleaded not guilty. The weight of these personal and legal troubles was evidently heavy on his mind in his final known conversation. He was believed to have been driving a silver and black 1988 Eagle Premier, and this vehicle has also never been located.
The complete absence of both Ernie and his vehicle has been a central and baffling element of the case. For over two decades, his whereabouts have remained entirely unknown. In recent years, volunteer underwater search groups, hearing of his case, have scoured local waterways, including the Arkansas River near Spadra Park, in the hopes of locating his missing 1988 Eagle Premier, but these searches have not yielded any results related to his disappearance.
