Tammi Jean Campbell, a 33-year-old single mother, vanished on June 12, 1999, from Grove City, Ohio. Originally from Texas, she had relocated to Ohio from Kentucky in 1998 to escape an abusive relationship with her ex-boyfriend, Gary Lee Robinson. Despite her efforts to start anew, Robinson followed her to Grove City in May 1999 and was staying with her at the time of her disappearance. On the evening she was last seen, Tammi dropped off her 12-year-old son at a friend's house, with plans to visit another friend and then work her shift at CVS Pharmacy the next day. She never made it to work, a behavior described as uncharacteristic for the reliable mother. Concern grew when she failed to return for her son, prompting her friend to check on her at her apartment on Southwest Boulevard. Upon arriving at Tammi's apartment, her friend found not Tammi, but Gary Lee Robinson. When questioned about Tammi's whereabouts, he suggested she was out using drugs. However, the scene at the apartment was unsettling; Tammi's purse, keys, and identification were all left behind, and her car was discovered parked across the street. Despite these concerning signs, there were no immediate indications of foul play. Tammi's friend attempted to file a missing person report three days after she was last seen but was initially unable to do so; a report was finally filed on June 18, six days after Tammi vanished. The investigation soon focused on Robinson, who had a history of domestic violence. A search of his parents' property uncovered some of Tammi's jewelry, including a necklace her son said she never took off, buried in the backyard. Years later, in May 2009, Gary Lee Robinson was indicted for Tammi Campbell's murder. During his trial in April 2010, his ex-girlfriend testified that he had confessed to choking Tammi to death in their apartment, wrapping her body in a carpet, and disposing of it in a landfill. Neighbors also reported hearing a loud thumping noise from Tammi's apartment on the night she disappeared. Despite an extensive search of the landfill, where authorities sifted through millions of pounds of refuse, Tammi's body was never found. In 2010, a jury found Robinson guilty of murder and tampering with evidence, and he was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison. The Social Security Administration had declared Tammi dead in 2008. The case of Tammi Campbell is a somber story of a mother's life cut short, and while a conviction brought a measure of justice, the absence of her remains leaves her loved ones without final closure.
