In the late summer of 2004, a compassionate and dedicated dentist named Richard Kirk Meyers vanished while enjoying a favorite pastime. At 50 years old, the Sequim, Washington resident was a familiar and welcome face in the coastal community of La Push, where he provided dental care to the Quileute Tribe three times a week. On August 31st, 2004, he set out for a day of fishing from the La Push Marina, alone in his 19-foot boat. It was the last time he was ever seen. The following day, his boat was discovered by the Coast Guard, adrift and unoccupied at the mouth of Goodman Creek, approximately eight miles south of where he had launched. The discovery was unsettling, as the boat's engine was still running with the keys left in the ignition, but of Richard, there was no sign. The initial discovery of the empty, running boat prompted an immediate and extensive search by the Coast Guard. The condition of the vessel offered a few clues; damage to the propeller suggested the boat might have been lifted by a wave and struck rocks. Despite the exhaustive efforts of search and rescue teams, no trace of Richard Meyers was ever found. The search was eventually suspended after several days, leaving his family, friends, and the community he served in a state of uncertainty and grief. For his wife, this devastating event was compounded by other recent family tragedies, creating an unimaginable burden of loss. The disappearance of Richard Meyers remains an open and unresolved case. With no further evidence or leads surfacing since the initial incident, the prevailing theory held by authorities is that he was tragically lost at sea. The Clallam County Sheriff's Department continues to hold the case file for the 5'7", 165-pound man with graying hair and brown eyes. The official narrative of his disappearance is one of a man who went out to enjoy the solace of the sea and never returned, a presumed victim of a sudden and unforeseen accident on the water. The lack of any definitive answers has left a lingering sense of sorrow for a man who dedicated his professional life to caring for others. The case stands as a somber reminder of the unforgiving power of the ocean and the profound emptiness left behind when a loved one vanishes without a trace.
