In the early hours of a summer morning in Hopewell, Virginia, 32-year-old Ivan Darnell Terry, known to some as 'Country,' vanished without a trace. On June 25, 2011, at approximately 2:00 a.m., he was seen leaving his residence on Danville Street. He was dressed in short pants and was not wearing a shirt. Ivan departed in his dark green 1979 Ford F-150 pickup truck, taking his fishing equipment with him, suggesting a possible intention to go fishing.
This departure marked the last time he was seen or heard from by his loved ones. The circumstances surrounding his disappearance were initially sparse, leaving his family and law enforcement with a perplexing mystery and the start of a long and arduous search for answers.
The initial stages of the investigation brought a significant but troubling discovery. Within a day, Ivan's green Ford F-150 pickup truck was found abandoned. The vehicle was located in Prince George County, off of Puddledock Road, an area his family noted he would sometimes visit to clear his head and be by himself. Inside the recovered truck were his fishing gear and other personal items, which struck investigators as strange. The fact that he seemingly left these belongings behind raised immediate concerns and suggested that his disappearance may not have been voluntary. Despite the recovery of his truck, there was no sign of Ivan himself, and his whereabouts remained completely unknown.
Over the years, the search for Ivan has continued, marked by periods of renewed effort and the application of new technologies. Law enforcement has faced challenges in maintaining consistent contact with his family, who have undoubtedly endured years of uncertainty. In a significant effort to bring closure, Hopewell Police, along with a dozen partner agencies, conducted an extensive search in April 2026 of a 60-acre area near where his truck was found. This operation utilized modern technology, including smartphones and tracking programs, to ensure a thorough search of the difficult terrain. Despite the comprehensive search, which involved about 50 people on foot and aerial drones, no evidence of Ivan, such as remains or personal items, was found. The case remains an active investigation, a painful and unresolved chapter for his family and community.
