Lewis Barrett Welch Jr., a well-known poet associated with the Beat Generation, disappeared on May 23, 1971, from Nevada City, California. Welch had been staying at the home of fellow poet Gary Snyder at the time. Suffering from depression and alcoholism, Welch left Snyder's house carrying a Smith & Wesson .22 caliber revolver, which he took from Snyder's belongings.
