Florence Anne Coker, aged 32, was last seen on July 18, 1981, in Crystal River, Florida. According to reports, she left her home on County Road 486 after an argument with her husband. Florence took some personal belongings, including her makeup and around $1,000 in cash, and drove off in her 1979 bronze Chevrolet Malibu. Two days later, her husband reported her missing. On July 29, her car was found abandoned in a parking lot near the Bayfront Center in St.
Petersburg, but there was no sign of Florence or her belongings.
At the time of her disappearance, her husband claimed she had been struggling with a drinking problem and was possibly depressed. However, her family did not believe she would have left without notifying her young son, who was visiting his father in New York at the time, or her ailing parents, especially given her close relationship with them.
