Davette Kathryn Gaunt, a 33-year-old woman from Vista, California, disappeared under suspicious circumstances on January 1, 1993. At the time of her disappearance, Gaunt was involved in a contentious custody battle with her boyfriend, Christopher McDonald, over their two-year-old daughter. Gaunt lived with McDonald at their shared home on Anza Avenue in Vista, but shortly after she was last seen, McDonald moved a new girlfriend into the home. Gaunt was never reported missing by McDonald, and it wasn't until May 1993, more than a year after she vanished, that a witness came forward to report her disappearance, fearing she had been murdered.
Investigators suspected foul play early on but lacked sufficient evidence to proceed with charges. McDonald raised their daughter for a brief period before sending her to live with his parents in Massachusetts. Over the years, Gaunt’s case remained unsolved, though authorities believed she had been killed and her body disposed of in either northern San Diego or Riverside County. Despite extensive efforts by law enforcement, Gaunt's body has never been found.
In 2011, the case was reopened, leading to new developments. Investigators re-interviewed witnesses, and with the passage of time, more individuals were willing to share information. By 2017, enough circumstantial evidence had been gathered to arrest McDonald, who was living in Arizona at the time. He was charged with Gaunt's murder, although no physical evidence, such as DNA, had ever been uncovered. The case against McDonald largely relied on the testimony of witnesses and renewed investigative work. To date, McDonald awaits trial for Gaunt's murder, and the search for her remains continues.
