Barbara Lee Elms, a 50-year-old woman from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was last seen on August 25, 1993. She was spotted by a neighbor walking away from her residence on 16th Street SE, dancing and wearing a Walkman with headphones, heading toward First Avenue East. Despite heavy rainfall that evening, she did not return home. Barbara had a history of mental illness and substance abuse and had previously disappeared for short periods but always returned within a few days, taking her personal belongings
with her. However, this time, she left behind all her possessions, including her purse and identification, and soup she had planned to eat was left out, indicating her disappearance was unplanned.
Barbara had been estranged from her husband for several years, and they were in the process of finalizing their divorce. Despite their separation, her husband continued to support her financially. Just a month before her disappearance, Barbara was assaulted in a park and robbed, which may have contributed to the fears surrounding her mental state. Her case remains unsolved, and her loved ones fear she may have either succumbed to harm or is living as a homeless individual elsewhere in the country.
