In the late winter of 1995, sixteen-year-old Nicole Russo of Brick, New Jersey, was described by her parents as mature for her age, yet also 'confused and lovesick'. She had recently dropped out of high school with aspirations of becoming an auto mechanic and had just started attending GED classes. In late February, she began a new relationship with nineteen-year-old Louis P. Urcinoli.
Her parents, though noting the age difference, initially approved of the relationship as he seemed well-mannered and mature. However, the relationship was brief and, in the days leading up to her disappearance, Nicole had expressed intentions to reconcile with a former boyfriend. This decision would prove to have tragic consequences.
On March 12, 1995, Nicole was last seen leaving her home in Brick with Urcinoli. She was reportedly going to spend time with him at his mother's home in Long Island and promised to call her parents if she decided to stay overnight. That call never came. When her concerned father contacted Urcinoli, he was told a story of an argument in Brooklyn, where Urcinoli claimed Nicole had gotten out of his car at 93rd Street and 7th Avenue around 9:30 p.m. He alleged she intended to go to her ex-boyfriend's house. He also claimed she had left behind her Mickey Mouse backpack, an item her family said she used as a purse and never went anywhere without. This account raised immediate suspicion for her family.
As the days turned into a week with no word from Nicole, her family's fears grew. The investigation by the Brick Township Police Department soon uncovered a more sinister version of events. Authorities discovered that Urcinoli was living in an apartment at the Parkside Motel. A neighbor reported seeing both Urcinoli and Nicole enter the apartment on the evening of March 12, which contradicted Urcinoli's timeline of dropping her off in Brooklyn. A search of the apartment revealed bloodstains and signs that someone had attempted to clean a crime scene. The investigation culminated in the arrest of Louis Urcinoli, who had fled to California. He was subsequently charged with and, in November 1996, convicted of Nicole's murder. The prosecution's case included a confession Urcinoli made to his uncle, Bernard Mancuso, detailing how he had beaten Nicole to death with a crowbar in his apartment after she told him she was leaving him. Urcinoli was also convicted of attempting to hire someone to murder Mancuso and his wife to prevent them from testifying. Despite the conviction, Nicole Russo's body has never been recovered, leaving her family without a final resting place for their daughter.
