Barbara Holik, a 33-year-old artist originally from Germany, went missing on June 23, 1995, in Taos, New Mexico. She had moved to the U.S. in 1989, settling in Taos, where she became well-known for her handcrafted jewelry and pottery. On the evening of her disappearance, she was last seen having drinks with friends at El Patio Bar near Taos Plaza before leaving to walk home around 11:00 p.m., something she often did. Despite not showing any signs of distress, she was never heard from again.
When Barbara failed to appear at work on June 26, her concerned employer visited her apartment. Inside, everything seemed undisturbed, including her purse, passport, and thousands of dollars in cash. Oddly, two work gloves were found out of place inside the apartment. A few days later, a maid discovered a pair of Barbara’s shoes in a neighboring apartment, which had recently been vacated by four men. The telephone cord in that apartment had been severed, and its bedding was missing, but unfortunately, by the time police were alerted, the apartment had already been cleaned, erasing any potential forensic evidence.
Although Barbara was described as a quiet and organized individual, foul play is strongly suspected in her disappearance. Over the years, police followed numerous leads, including a grave near Tres Piedras and a bloodstained shirt found years later, but no significant breakthroughs were made. Her case remains unsolved, with suspicions of abduction or possibly even a connection to illicit activities due to the large sums of cash found in her apartment.
