In the summer of 1999, 42-year-old Sherryl Lynne Jacquot, a Native American woman, vanished from her home in Stilwell, Oklahoma, leaving behind a life that was both cherished by her loved ones and fraught with turmoil. The last time her family physically saw her was on June 23, 1999, when she visited her mother's home in Oklahoma City to borrow money. During this visit, her mother and sister noticed she had concerning injuries, including a significant cut on her lower back and a deep gash on her right foot. Sherryl explained that she had been in a fight with her boyfriend and had fallen into a glass-topped coffee table. Despite her family's pleas for her to seek medical attention, she refused. This would be the final time they would see her in person. A little over a week later, on July 3, 1999, Sherryl made a phone call to her mother from an unknown number in Fort Smith, Arkansas. She promised to return to Oklahoma City to repay the money she had borrowed, but she never arrived and was never heard from again. Sherryl was described as a woman who appreciated the finer things in life, with a love for the racetrack and her starched jeans; she was known for her infectious laugh. She had black hair, brown eyes, and two distinctive Harley-Davidson tattoos, one on her left forearm and another of Harley wings on her right hip. She sometimes went by the last name Shade. At the time of her disappearance, she lived in a trailer in Stilwell and did not own a phone, relying on a nearby grocery store to make and receive calls. Her teenage daughter, who lived with a relative in Pennsylvania, had tried to reach her at the store on the day she was last heard from but was unsuccessful. It was not entirely out of character for Sherryl to be out of touch with her family for periods, so they did not immediately worry. However, their concern grew into alarm when in January 2000, a family friend contacted Sherryl's mother with a rumor that she was deceased. This prompted her family to try and locate her, and upon failing to do so, they officially reported her missing. The investigation into Sherryl's disappearance revealed a troubling picture of her life at the time. She was known to be involved with a rough crowd and was in an abusive relationship with her boyfriend. When her family went to her last known address, they found her trailer on Highway 100 in Stilwell in a dilapidated state, appearing as though it had not been lived in for some time. Heartbreakingly, her dogs were still at the property, seemingly unfed for a long while. There was no sign of Sherryl or the small, off-white Datsun pickup truck she drove, which has never been recovered. The circumstances surrounding her disappearance are considered suspicious, with foul play strongly suspected. Her case is a somber reminder of the many individuals who vanish under troubling circumstances, leaving behind families to grapple with unanswered questions and enduring grief. The Adair County Sheriff's Department and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation have been involved in the investigation of her case, which remains unsolved.
