On a Friday evening, September 24, 1999, 34-year-old Maria Procopio left her job as an accounts receivable specialist at QVC in West Chester, Pennsylvania. She mentioned to her colleagues that she had plans to meet someone after her shift ended around 5:10 p.m. The last known sighting of Maria was at approximately 7:00 p.m. that evening near the Newton Shopping Center, in the area of Route 3 and Route 252. After she failed to return to her home in South Philadelphia and made no contact with her loved ones, her sister grew deeply concerned and officially reported her missing on October 5, 1999. The initial search for Maria yielded a significant but grim discovery two days later. On October 7, her red 1990 Pontiac Sunbird coupe was found abandoned behind Chick's Tavern in Bridgeport, Pennsylvania. The vehicle was legally parked, and an anti-theft device was in place on the steering wheel. Investigators noted that the driver's seat was adjusted to a position that would be appropriate for someone of Maria's height, but the car had been meticulously wiped clean, leaving no fingerprints behind. As the investigation into Maria's life unfolded, details emerged that were unknown even to her closest friends and family. Authorities discovered she had been leading a secret life as a dominatrix, using the name "Mistress Maria". This revelation opened up new avenues in the investigation, though it remains unclear if this aspect of her life was connected to her disappearance. The focus of the investigation soon centered on her boyfriend, Andrew Charles Thomas. Loved ones reported that Thomas had been physically abusive towards Maria, and just days before she vanished, she had informed police about his involvement in criminal activities. When police searched Thomas's apartment in connection with Maria's case, they found counterfeit money, fake identification, and night-vision equipment. While he was subsequently convicted and imprisoned for welfare fraud and counterfeiting, he was never charged in Maria's disappearance. For years, Maria Procopio's case remained cold, a painful mystery for her family who had her legally declared dead in 2006. A dramatic and violent turn of events in September 2012 brought the case back into the headlines. Andrew Charles Thomas, the prime suspect in Maria's disappearance, fatally shot a police officer in Plymouth Township before taking his own life. While he consistently denied any involvement in her case up until his death, he remains the only significant suspect. The case is clouded by unanswered questions and the tragic reality that with the death of the primary suspect, the full truth of what happened to Maria may never be uncovered. Foul play is strongly suspected, and her disappearance is considered a presumed murder, leaving her family without closure.
