On a cold winter day in February 2001, 53-year-old John David Smith disappeared from the Springfield, Missouri, area. Known also by the nicknames Tom or Tommy, he was last seen on February 15th. His case became inextricably linked with that of his girlfriend, Maureen Webb, who vanished the very next day from her home in Bolivar, Missouri, after telling friends she was going to visit him. The couple was believed to be traveling in Maureen's black 1990 Ford Aerostar van.
The van was later discovered abandoned in the parking lot of a local mall, but there was no sign of John or Maureen.
The circumstances surrounding the couple's disappearance quickly pointed toward a grim scenario, and law enforcement began to suspect foul play. The investigation led them to a couple, Richard and Thenia Evans, who were eventually charged in 2006 with the murders of both John and Maureen. The prosecution's case was built on a theory that the couple had been shot and their bodies dismembered. Authorities conducted a search of a property associated with Richard Evans, where they found bone fragments and a spent shell casing, pieces of evidence that seemed to corroborate their suspicions.
Despite the arrests and the disturbing evidence uncovered, the path to justice has been fraught with obstacles. The case against Richard and Thenia Evans ultimately collapsed when a key witness refused to provide testimony. This left prosecutors unable to proceed, and the charges were eventually dropped, leaving the disappearances of John Smith and Maureen Webb officially unsolved. Their bodies have never been located, and without further evidence or testimony, the case has grown cold.
