In the autumn of 1985, a 36-year-old avid outdoorsman named Kevin O'Keefe embarked on a solo camping and photography expedition into the remote wilderness of Glacier Bay National Park in Alaska. An experienced adventurer from Sacramento, California, he was well-prepared for the challenges of the Alaskan backcountry, having even taken a survival course. He arrived in Juneau in late September and was flown into a remote area near Wolf Point to begin his journey.
His plan was to spend approximately three weeks immersing himself in the pristine, rugged landscape, capturing its beauty through his camera lens. He was last in contact on September 28, 1985, and had arranged for a float plane to pick him up on October 10. However, when the plane arrived at the pre-arranged time and location, O'Keefe was nowhere to be found.
The pilot's report of O'Keefe's failure to show for his pickup triggered an immediate search and rescue operation. Park rangers were dispatched to his last known location, where they discovered his campsite. The scene they encountered was perplexing; the tent was set up, and inside were his sleeping bag, food, and other essential gear, suggesting he had only intended to be gone for a short day hike.
