Michaelle Marie Champagne, a 29-year-old Belgian citizen, was a woman known for her independence and adventurous spirit. Having moved to Spokane, Washington in 1990 with her then-husband, who was serving in the U.S. Air Force, she had built a life for herself, often working as a cook or waitress. A talented athlete, she had even played soccer at a national level in her home country of Belgium. After her divorce in late 1992, she remained in Spokane. The last confirmed contact anyone had with Michaelle was on March 9, 1993. She had just returned to the United States from a trip to Belgium with her boyfriend and called her parents from Washington D.C. to let them know she had arrived safely and planned to do some sightseeing before returning to Spokane. Her family, accustomed to her regular calls, never heard from her again. It wasn't until six months later, on September 8, 1993, that Michaelle's live-in boyfriend reported her missing to the Spokane Police Department. He claimed he was filing the report at the persistent request of her worried parents in Belgium. He told authorities that he and Michaelle had broken up on March 17, and that the last time he had seen her was in June of 1993, riding a motorcycle in the Spokane area. The investigation into her disappearance uncovered troubling details. In the months between Michaelle's last contact with her family and when she was reported missing, her boyfriend had used her credit cards and sold her furniture that was in storage, as well as a car they owned together. Police also discovered that upon his return from Washington D.C. in March, he checked into a Spokane motel alone. The investigation into Michaelle Champagne's disappearance has faced many challenges over the years, leaving her family with unanswered questions. Detectives in Spokane believe she may have been a victim of homicide. In 2011, there was a renewed push in the investigation, with police collecting DNA samples from her parents and brother in Belgium to compare against unidentified remains. Investigators also hoped to re-interview witnesses and uncover new leads. Despite these efforts, her case remains unsolved. The circumstances surrounding her disappearance, including the delay in reporting her missing and the suspicious activities of her then-boyfriend, paint a concerning picture. The official date of her last contact is recorded by some agencies as June 1, 1993, based on her ex-boyfriend's unconfirmed sighting, though her family's last communication with her was definitively in March of that year. The case is a sorrowful puzzle, with a vibrant young woman at its center who vanished without a trace.
