In the spring of 2000, 32-year-old William Meehan was facing some personal and professional challenges. In an effort to offer support, his brother, Peter, suggested a trip to the Jersey Shore, a place where they had spent happy summers during their childhood. On April 28, 2000, the two brothers drove from East Brunswick to Belmar, New Jersey. Peter believed the familiar sight of the ocean might lift his brother's spirits. Upon arriving at MacLearie Park, William pulled the car over.
As Peter stepped out to take in the ocean view, William unexpectedly locked the car doors and drove off, heading north on Route 35, leaving his brother behind.
Peter, assuming his brother needed some time alone to sort through his thoughts, decided not to alert their parents and began the long walk back home to East Brunswick. He arrived the next morning, surprised to find that William and his car had not yet returned. As days turned into a week with no word from William, his family grew increasingly concerned and reported him missing on May 5th. Investigators were able to track some activity on William's AT&T calling card on May 4th, but were unable to trace the calls. The investigation took a significant turn when it was discovered that William's silver four-door Oldsmobile 88 had been involved in a hit-and-run accident on Route 22 in Green Brook, New Jersey. The driver of the vehicle had fled the scene, and William has not been seen or heard from since.
At the time of his disappearance, William was described as a Caucasian male, standing at 5'10' and weighing 205 pounds, with sandy brown hair and blue eyes. He was last seen wearing a pink and gray shirt, blue jeans, and white 'Avia' brand sneakers. He has a scar on his left shoulder blade from a childhood go-cart accident and another scar on his forehead. The circumstances surrounding his disappearance remain a mystery. The case is being investigated by both the New Brunswick and Belmar Police Departments. The abrupt departure from his brother, the subsequent car accident, and the complete lack of communication have left his family with unanswered questions and a profound sense of loss.
