In the spring of 2000, 32-year-old William Meehan was facing some personal and professional challenges. In an effort to offer support, his brother, Peter, suggested a trip to the Jersey Shore, a place where they had spent happy summers during their childhood. On April 28, 2000, the two brothers drove from East Brunswick to Belmar, New Jersey. Peter believed the familiar sight of the ocean might lift his brother's spirits.
