On October 27, 2000, 49-year-old Alfred "Al" Kochendorfer, a male resident of Palmer, Alaska, embarked on what was planned as a three- or four-day bear hunting trip. An experienced hunter familiar with the rugged Alaskan wilderness, he departed from his family's home with plans to hunt near the Knik Glacier in an area known as the Butte. Later that day, he was seen at a gas station in the Butte area; it would be the last time anyone reported seeing him. His wife noted that he was accustomed to solo, multi-day hunting excursions and knew the local terrain well. He was well-equipped for the journey, carrying hunting supplies, cold-weather gear, extra gasoline, and a gray dome tent. Concern grew when Kochendorfer did not return as planned. Several days after his last sighting, two hunters discovered his abandoned four-wheeler along a trail in the Jim Creek area, approximately one mile from his residence. There was no trace of Kochendorfer or his hunting gear at the scene. This discovery prompted an extensive search and rescue operation in the surrounding wilderness. For days, teams scoured the area, but their efforts yielded no clues as to his whereabouts or what might have happened to him. The search was eventually called off, leaving his family and the community with unanswered questions. At the time of his disappearance, he was described as a White male, 5'8" and 170 pounds, with brown hair, hazel eyes, and a beard. He was reportedly wearing a blue jacket, tan bib overalls, and white "Bunny Boots". He also has distinctive scars on his lower left arm. The years since Alfred Kochendorfer's disappearance have not brought any significant breakthroughs in the case. The Alaska State Troopers in Palmer have kept the investigation open, but the trail has long gone cold. His case is a poignant reminder of the inherent dangers of the vast and unforgiving Alaskan backcountry, where even the most experienced outdoorsmen can vanish without a trace. Despite the passage of time, the circumstances surrounding his disappearance remain a mystery.
