On October 27, 2000, 49-year-old Alfred 'Al' Kochendorfer, a male resident of Palmer, Alaska, embarked on what was planned as a three- or four-day bear hunting trip. An experienced hunter familiar with the rugged Alaskan wilderness, he departed from his family's home with plans to hunt near the Knik Glacier in an area known as the Butte.
