In May of 2005, Jeffrey Lee Fossum, a 50-year-old resident of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, vanished under perplexing circumstances. A neighbor initiated the official missing person report after a concerning series of events. Initially, the neighbor found Mr. Fossum's two Golden Retrievers running loose and his home on Thistlebrook Lane unlocked.
After six days with no sign of his return, the neighbor contacted the Steamboat Springs Police Department, prompting an investigation into his sudden disappearance. At the time he went missing, he was described as a white male, 5'8' tall and weighing 150 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes.
The investigation soon led to a significant discovery approximately 20 miles north of Steamboat Springs. Days after he was reported missing, Mr. Fossum's black 2002 Toyota Land Cruiser was found abandoned. The vehicle was located near a bridge over the Elk River, in the vicinity of the Hinman Campgrounds and the Southfork Trailhead. This area, off County Road 64, is a remote location known for outdoor recreation. Inside the deserted vehicle, investigators found a cryptic note containing a coded message, adding a layer of mystery to the case. The contents and meaning of this message have not been publicly disclosed.
Despite extensive search efforts, the circumstances surrounding Jeffrey Fossum's disappearance remain unresolved. An intense search was launched involving Routt County Search and Rescue, Steamboat Springs Police, and numerous volunteers. The search team utilized five scent dogs and a cadaver dog in their efforts to locate him, but no trace was found. Friends and family conveyed to investigators that it was highly uncharacteristic of him to leave without notice. They described him as an avid outdoorsman who would not have ventured into the wilderness for hiking or camping without informing someone of his plans and, crucially, without his beloved dogs and essential camping equipment.
