In the summer of 2013, a 28-year-old man named Ronal Estuardo Sanchez Gramajo vanished near Nogales, Arizona, under deeply concerning circumstances. On either June 21st or 22nd, Ronal placed a call to his wife, a conversation that would be their last. He was in the process of crossing the border with a group, and the journey had taken a severe toll on him. Exhausted and unable to continue walking, he expressed his intention to surrender to authorities.
The guides accompanying the group reportedly gave him a cell phone, instructing him to call 911 but to wait approximately four hours before doing so, allowing the rest of the group time to get away.
The days that followed were filled with uncertainty and conflicting information for Ronal's family. A few days later, on June 24th or 25th, the group he had been traveling with was apprehended. One of the individuals taken into custody, who was also one of the guides, later relayed a piece of information to Ronal's wife that initially offered a glimmer of hope. He claimed to have overheard Border Patrol agents mention that they had apprehended another member of their group, which was presumed to be Ronal. However, this information could not be officially confirmed, leaving his loved ones in a painful state of limbo.
Despite the account from the guide, Ronal's wife never heard from him again. In the years since his disappearance, there has been no official confirmation of his apprehension or any record of him being in any detention center. The Pima County Medical Examiner's Office is the investigating agency in this case. The last known clothing Ronal was wearing consisted of blue jeans, an orange short-sleeved polo shirt, and a white Adidas jacket. He was also carrying a backpack with orange, blue, and gray stripes, along with a brown rosary and his identification. This case represents a profound loss for a family left without answers, a narrative of a man who, at his most vulnerable, seemingly disappeared without a trace.
