In the summer of 1974, Francis Loretta Heath, a 45-year-old woman also known by her married name, Wells, embarked on a journey from which she would never return. On August 13th, she boarded a Trailways bus in Crossett, Arkansas, with plans to visit family in El Paso, Texas. She was expected to make the return trip the following Sunday. At the time of her departure, she was described as wearing a green shirt, a yellow and purplish plaid overshirt, and jeans, with her black hair possibly in a
ponytail. She was a mother to four children.
Days after she was expected back in Crossett, a troubling development occurred: the bus line returned her luggage. There was no sign of Francis, and no evidence has ever surfaced to suggest she reached her destination in El Paso. Her family has stated that they reported her missing to local authorities in 1974, but official documentation of this initial report has not been located. The absence of a formal record from the time of her disappearance has added a layer of complexity to the investigation in the subsequent decades.
The passage of time has not diminished the questions surrounding Francis Heath's disappearance. Her case remained largely out of the public eye for many years until it was officially entered into the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System in March 2014, nearly four decades after she was last seen.
