JoAnn Benner, a 21-year-old mother of two, disappeared from her home in Bayou George, Florida, on May 14, 1976. Her husband, Gary Benner, claimed she left in the middle of the night and never returned. However, the circumstances surrounding her disappearance raised immediate suspicion, particularly because of conflicting evidence and strange behavior exhibited by her husband.
Shortly after JoAnn's disappearance, her three-year-old daughter told a relative that her mother had been bleeding from the stomach, which added to the mystery and concern.
Upon investigation, authorities discovered blood stains in the Benner home, as well as sections of carpeting that had been removed. The carpet was later found burned in a trash can.
