Patricia Ann Wood, a 4-year-old girl, disappeared from her home in Swanzey, New Hampshire, in 1976 under highly suspicious circumstances. Born on October 12, 1972, Patricia was living with her father, John Wood, and stepmother, Judith Wood, at the time. Despite the unsettling nature of her disappearance, it was not reported to the authorities until 1987—11 years later.
Patricia’s father and stepmother had misled people with conflicting stories, claiming at various times that Patricia was either living with her biological mother or had died in a car accident, neither of which was true.
Patricia had a troubled home life, having been hospitalized for serious injuries, including brain swelling, which led to suspicions of abuse. She was placed in foster care for a few months but was returned to her family after authorities closed her case. After she went missing in 1976, her step-siblings later revealed that their mother frequently disciplined Patricia harshly. One of the step-siblings told police that their parents had drowned Patricia in a bathtub and buried her body in the backyard.
When authorities began investigating in 1987, John and Judith Wood committed suicide shortly after being questioned, leaving behind no explanation of Patricia’s fate.
