In the spring of 1992, a 60-year-old man named William Francis Horning vanished from his home in Gladstone, Missouri. He was last seen on May 4th of that year. His disappearance was officially reported by his wife two days later. At the time he went missing, Horning was described as a white male, standing at 5'10' and weighing 170 pounds, with graying, balding hair and green eyes. He wore glasses and had a mole on his back and a scar on his right shoulder.
The circumstances surrounding his disappearance were anything but ordinary, as just three days prior, he had approached federal authorities with a startling confession.
Horning had informed federal authorities in Kansas City that he had been contracted to kill a real estate owner named John Bray in July of 1991. He claimed that a woman who stood to inherit a significant portion of Bray's estate had hired him for the task. On the day he was last seen, Horning was observed leaving his residence in a company truck accompanied by one of his employees. Some investigators and family members believe he may have been murdered due to his involvement in the murder-for-hire plot he had just revealed. Others speculate that he may have gone into hiding, fearing for his life.
