Daniel Murry Dutton, a 28-year-old cab driver from Long Beach, Mississippi, was last seen on the night of July 8, 2000. He left his parents' home, where he lived, and left a note stating that he would be gone for a few days. Dutton worked for the Yellow Cab company in Biloxi, and his last fare was to an address in Gulfport, Mississippi. His father saw him at home around 11:00 p.m. that night, but the next morning, Dutton was gone.
On July 13, five days later, his taxi was discovered abandoned in the parking lot of a Days Inn in Lake City, Florida, 400 miles away. His eyeglasses, checkbook, and some receipts were found inside the vehicle, along with half a roll of duct tape and a bent golf club in the trunk. There were no signs of struggle or blood, and no fingerprints were recovered from the vehicle. A receipt dated July 9 indicated Dutton likely rented a room at an EconoLodge in Gainesville, Florida, though it remains unclear if he was alone.
Dutton, described as a quiet and reserved individual, had been facing financial issues leading up to his disappearance. His checking account was overdrawn, and his credit cards were maxed out to the tune of $10,000. Additionally, a .22 caliber gun, purchased by his father, disappeared along with him. Since then, Dutton has not accessed his financial accounts or contacted anyone via email. His case remains unsolved, and both of his parents have since passed away without answers about his fate.
