On a summer day in June of 2001, 34-year-old John Paul Wright was enjoying a day on the river with his wife and their young son, accompanied by friends. The group was near the 238-mile marker on the Mississippi River in Winfield, Missouri, when their boat unexpectedly ran out of gas.
