Teresa Schmidt, a 53-year-old social worker from Avon, Indiana, was visiting the Lost Valley Guest Ranch in Jefferson County, Colorado, with her husband in early September 2002. Her husband, an anesthesiologist, was attending a medical conference at the ranch. On the afternoon of September 6, 2002, Teresa, an experienced hiker, decided to embark on a solo hike. She was familiar with the area from previous visits, but a recent forest fire had significantly altered the landscape.
Carrying a backpack with a jacket and two bottles of water, she was last seen at approximately 3:00 p.m. on a trail heading towards a rocky overlook east of the ranch. She was wearing stonewashed jeans, a light-colored shirt, a turquoise windbreaker, and a black fannypack.
When Teresa failed to return to the ranch that evening, her husband reported her missing at 7:00 p.m. A search effort was initiated at 2:00 a.m. the following day. For six days, a team of nearly seventy volunteer searchers, tracker dogs, and helicopters scoured the rugged terrain for any sign of the missing hiker. Her husband also spent several days searching the area on his motorcycle. The search was hampered by inclement weather, making the already challenging conditions even more difficult.
