On July 4, 2012, 65-year-old Michael LeMaitre, a male resident of Anchorage, vanished while competing in the grueling Mount Marathon Race in Seward, Alaska. This was his first time participating in the notoriously difficult 3.1 to 3.5-mile race, which involves a steep, near-vertical climb of over 3,000 feet and a treacherous descent over shale, snowfields, and waterfalls. The effort involved up to 70 people, including the Alaska State Troopers, the Seward Volunteer Fire Department, the Alaska Air National Guard, and specialized mountain rescue teams with helicopters and search dogs. They scoured the mountain, using infrared technology to scan the terrain, but found no trace of him. The official search was scaled back after four days, though volunteer and family-led efforts continued for weeks amidst deteriorating weather. The disappearance of Michael LeMaitre remains a perplexing mystery. Despite thousands of hours spent searching the mountain, not a single piece of physical evidence—no clothing, no gear, not even his race bib—has ever been found. His case marked the first presumed fatality in the long history of the Mount Marathon Race, which dates back to 1915. In the wake of his disappearance and other injuries that year, race organizers implemented new safety measures, including mandatory course experience, cutoff times to prevent stragglers, and "sweepers" who follow the last runner to ensure everyone gets off the mountain safely. LeMaitre was legally declared dead in August 2012, though his case remains an active missing person investigation with the Alaska State Troopers.
