On July 4, 2012, 65-year-old Michael LeMaitre, a male resident of Anchorage, vanished while competing in the grueling Mount Marathon Race in Seward, Alaska. This was his first time participating in the notoriously difficult 3.1 to 3.5-mile race, which involves a steep, near-vertical climb of over 3,000 feet and a treacherous descent over shale, snowfields, and waterfalls.
