The last confirmed sighting of Dean was by his father, with whom he shared a meal at a local Denny's Restaurant. After their time together, Dean departed with two friends in a tan Chevrolet sedan. He was last seen wearing baggy jean pants, a shirt of an unknown color, and sneakers. He also typically wore a silver chain with a silver cross. Compounding the concern for his welfare was the knowledge that Dean was a known drug user and had recently been released from a New York State correctional facility. These factors, combined with his abrupt disappearance, led authorities to classify him as an endangered missing person. The investigation into Dean French's disappearance has been handled by the Steuben County Sheriff's Office. Despite the passage of time, few details about the case have been made public. The identity of the two friends he was last seen with and the nature of their relationship with Dean have not been widely reported.
