In the late fall of 2013, a sense of unease settled over the family of Allen Fletcher, a 30-year-old man from Port Townsend, Washington. Fletcher, a newly licensed boat captain, was last seen on the evening of November 19, 2013, in the vicinity of the Langley Marina on Whidbey Island. He was helping a couple he had met through a friend sail their new boat from Edmonds to Bellingham. Due to stormy weather, the group decided to dock for the night at the South Whidbey Harbor in Langley. Accounts from that evening suggest that after Fletcher became intoxicated, the couple asked him to leave their vessel. Some witnesses at the marina reported that the couple seemed to be afraid of him. Fletcher was seen near the marina, and phone records confirmed he made a frustrated call to a friend and a final call to the boat's owner. The following day, he was gone. The initial search for Allen Fletcher yielded few clues, deepening the mystery surrounding his disappearance. There was a concerning 10-day gap between when Fletcher was last seen and when his family was able to report him missing to the Langley Police Department. Investigators notified the harbor master, the Coast Guard, and ferry workers about the missing man. Divers from the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office were brought in to search the frigid waters near the marina. Their search led to the discovery of a dark-blue jacket believed to belong to Fletcher, found in a condition that suggested it had not been worn when it entered the water. Despite the divers' efforts, no other signs of Fletcher were found at that time. For years, his family held onto hope, imagining various scenarios that might explain his absence, while police were left with a perplexing and highly unusual missing person case. For nearly a decade, the fate of Allen Fletcher remained an agonizing unknown for his loved ones. The case finally saw a significant breakthrough in the fall of 2022 when divers with the Reef Environmental Education Foundation discovered what appeared to be a human femur bone in the water near the South Whidbey Harbor. A few months later, more remains were found, ultimately accounting for about 60 percent of a skeleton. Crucially, a driver's license belonging to Allen Fletcher was located near the remains. In the spring of 2023, the Langley Chief of Police confirmed that DNA testing had positively identified the remains as those of Allen Fletcher. An examination of the skeletal remains showed no signs of suspicious trauma, such as fractures or wounds. While the definitive cause of his death may never be known, the discovery brought a painful and long-awaited sense of closure to his family, officially closing the nearly ten-year-old missing person case.
