In the summer of 1973, a young man named Anthony Shane Bertoglio, who often went by Shane, disappeared from the small, boat-access-only community of Halibut Cove, Alaska. At just 15 years old, he was last seen on August 9th, setting out in a skiff with the intention of crossing the waters to Homer. The journey was one undertaken by many in the region, a routine trip across the bay. He was dressed in a Levis jacket, jeans, and tennis shoes. At the time of his disappearance, he was described as a Caucasian male with brown hair and brown eyes, standing at 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighing approximately 130 pounds. The alarm was raised when Shane did not arrive in Homer as expected. A search was initiated, and the grim discovery of his overturned skiff in China Poot Bay on that same day confirmed that something had gone terribly wrong. The Alaska State Troopers were notified of the incident on August 10, 1973, and opened an investigation into his disappearance. Despite search efforts, Shane was never found, and the vast and often unforgiving waters of Kachemak Bay held the secrets of his fate. The prevailing theory is that Shane drowned in the turbulent waters after his skiff capsized. Over the years, his case has remained open, a lingering source of sorrow and unanswered questions for his family and the close-knit community of Halibut Cove. While he is presumed to have drowned, without the recovery of his remains, his official status remains that of a missing person. The case serves as a somber reminder of the inherent dangers of the Alaskan wilderness and the sea, and of a young life cut tragically short. His disappearance is a piece of the history of the Kenai Peninsula Borough, a story of loss that has been passed down through generations.
