On a summer day in August of 1975, 40-year-old James Byron Brewer, a male resident of Clam Gulch, Alaska, was with his son and a friend at Tustumena Lake. The group was reportedly crossing the lake between Nicoli Creek and Moose Beach when they encountered peril. James, who was a carpentry teacher at Kenai Central High School, was known by his friends and family as Jim. He and his wife, Dorris, also a teacher, had moved to the Kenai Peninsula in the early 1960s, where they raised their family. The events that transpired on Tustumena Lake that day are not known with certainty, but it is believed that the small boat carrying Brewer, his nine-year-old son Byron, and their friend Stephen Arthur Koch, was likely capsized or swamped by the lake's turbulent waters. Tragically, all three individuals were believed to have drowned in the incident. A search for the two men and the young boy was launched, but it was ultimately abandoned. Though most of the gear from the boat was recovered because it had been securely tied down, the three individuals were never found. The loss of James Brewer, his son, and their friend was a profound tragedy for their families and the local community. The 1976 yearbook for Kenai Central High School, where James had taught, was dedicated in his memory, featuring photographs of him on hunting trips. The dedication spoke of the lasting memories of happy times spent together. In early October of 1975, James Brewer and Stephen Koch were officially declared dead. The case remains a somber reminder of the dangers of the Alaskan wilderness and the lasting impact of their disappearance on those who knew and loved them.
