In the spring of 1983, a 30-year-old man named John Kelly Gentry vanished from Monroe, Michigan, leaving behind a dark and unsettling mystery. His disappearance on April 12, 1983, was not that of a conventional missing person. Instead, it marked the beginning of a decades-long manhunt for a man linked to two brutal murders. The first victim was his 25-year-old girlfriend, Barbara Gerber, who was discovered stabbed to death in her Summerfield Township home on the same day Gentry was last seen. Her car was missing, later to be found in Toledo, Ohio, which would soon become the second location in this grim sequence of events. The search for Gentry led investigators to Toledo, where he was also romantically involved with a man named William Veith. Just six days after Gerber's body was found, authorities discovered the body of 52-year-old Veith in the basement of his rare coin shop. He had been bludgeoned to death. Investigators believe the motive for the killings may have been that Gerber and Veith had learned about each other. Following the discovery of Veith's body, his car was also reported stolen and was later recovered in South Bend, Indiana. The only communication from Gentry after his disappearance came in the form of two postcards mailed from Southern California in May 1983, one to a friend from San Diego and another to his father from Los Angeles. After that, the trail went cold. For decades, John Kelly Gentry has remained a fugitive, his name appearing on Michigan's Most Wanted list. A nationwide arrest warrant for murder was issued in 1988 and remains active. The case has taken unusual turns over the years, with authorities receiving information that Gentry might be living in California, possibly presenting as a woman. This has led to the release of age-progressed photos depicting what he might look like as an older man. Despite the passage of time, law enforcement has not given up the search, holding onto hope that someone might recognize him and bring closure to the families of Barbara Gerber and William Veith.
