After letting them in at around 2 a.m., Joan went to her bedroom, and her sons left, locking the door behind them. When they returned later in the morning, Joan was missing. All her personal belongings, including her purse, medication, cigarettes, and clothes, were left behind, with only her nightclothes and a high-altitude map missing.
Neighbors reported hearing a car with a low-rumbling muffler around 3 a.m., followed by the sound of a car door slamming and voices. A child also claimed to have heard screaming that morning, but there were no other clues, and Joan was never seen again. Joan, who suffered from health issues requiring medication, had a relatively isolated lifestyle and was upset at the time about her son's planned move to South Carolina.
