In the summer of 2004, a 30-year-old man named Porfirio Gabriel Lugardo-Montufar vanished under troubling circumstances after making a hopeful phone call to his family. On July 17, 2004, Porfirio contacted his brother, Martin, to let him know he had successfully crossed the border and was in the foothills near Yuma, Arizona. During this conversation, he mentioned that he was with someone who had agreed to drive him to Mesa, Arizona, for a fee of $250.
The call was made from a cellular phone with a 520 area code, which his brother believed belonged to the individual who was supposed to provide the transportation. Porfirio, needing money for food, asked his brother to wire him some funds.
Acting on his brother's request, Martin promptly sent $100 via Western Union on that same day. However, the wired money was never picked up. A week later, when Martin attempted to call the number from which Porfirio had contacted him, he discovered that the line had been disconnected. This was the last time anyone in his family had any communication with him. Concern grew as days turned into weeks with no word from Porfirio. At the time of his disappearance, he was described as a Hispanic male with brown hair and brown eyes, standing at 5 feet 1 inch tall and weighing approximately 135 pounds. A distinguishing physical feature noted was the presence of two two-inch scars on the back of his head resulting from a previous fall.
