On May 4, 1984, in the small community of Port Norris, New Jersey, 20-year-old Angela Darcel Cephas was last seen riding a distinctive pink and white bicycle. At the time of her disappearance, she was seven months pregnant with her first child, a daughter expected in early August of that year. Angela, a woman with a light complexion and facial freckles, was wearing a brown sweater, a white t-shirt, gray maternity pants, and blue sneakers. She left her family's home on Dragston Road around midday, telling her sister she was going to visit her former boyfriend who lived nearby. She left behind her purse, cigarettes, and watch, suggesting she did not intend to be gone for long. The bicycle she was riding was a pink and white 20-inch Huffy girls' model with a white banana seat, flowers on the frame, and the initials "KC" near the handlebars.
Angela's family grew concerned when she did not return home.
Her sisters stated that the man she was going to visit was the father of her unborn child and that he had been unwilling to take responsibility for the baby. This man, an older individual who lived about a quarter of a mile away, later denied being her boyfriend or the father of her child, claiming he only knew her as a neighbor. He refused to cooperate with the police investigation into her disappearance. Although Angela had previously mentioned the idea of running away, her family does not believe she would have left without telling them where she was going, especially since she had never lived outside of her neighborhood.
The days and weeks following Angela's disappearance were filled with searches by her family and law enforcement.
