In the summer of 2002, a sense of quiet concern settled over the community of Ferndale, Washington, following the disappearance of a local resident. Mark Jay Hess, a 46-year-old man, vanished on July 8, 2002. He was last seen by his parents at his home in Ferndale. At the time of his disappearance, Hess was unemployed. It would take nearly two more years for the remains to be formally identified. The delay was attributed in part to a backlog at labs capable of extracting a viable DNA sample from the aged remains. Finally, in November 2024, the Whatcom County Medical Examiner confirmed through DNA testing that the remains were those of Mark Jay Hess. After twenty-two years of uncertainty, the family of Mark Hess received the devastating confirmation that their loved one was deceased. The discovery brought a close to the long-standing missing person case, though the investigation into his death remains open pending a final report from the medical examiner. This tragic resolution provided a degree of closure, yet it also marked the final, heartbreaking chapter in the two-decade-long search for Mark Hess.
