In early April 2007, Reinhard Kirchner, a 61-year-old physicist from Germany, vanished while hiking in a remote part of the Navajo Reservation in Coconino County, Arizona. An experienced and physically fit hiker, Kirchner had a deep appreciation for the Colorado Plateau, a region he had explored extensively on numerous trips to the United States.
