In the small town of Coupeville, Washington, a sense of concern settled over the community when 50-year-old Bruce Cameron McCulloch was last seen on November 17, 2010. A report was filed with the Island County Sheriff's Office, initiating a missing person investigation for the man who was known for his kind and considerate nature. At the time of his disappearance, he was described as being 6-feet-1-inch tall and weighing 180 pounds, with graying hair and blue eyes. He was believed to be wearing blue jeans and a puffy blue coat, and possibly a gold necklace adorned with a dolphin. The circumstances surrounding his disappearance were not publicly detailed, leaving friends, family, and the community waiting for answers. Bruce was remembered by those who knew him as a beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend. Born in 1960, he grew up in Shoreline, Washington, and later earned bachelor's degrees in Anthropology and History from the University of Washington. For 24 years, he was a dedicated employee at Rite Aid. His life was marked by a deep love for nature, music, and learning; he enjoyed hiking, playing the piano, reading, and listening to a wide range of music from classical to Bob Marley. A man of faith, he was known for putting others before himself. This compassionate spirit was especially evident in his work with children, having taught for Americorps and in the Basic Skills program at Coupeville Elementary, where he found great joy in watching his students learn. Although he was reported as a missing person, the search for Bruce McCulloch sadly concluded with the confirmation of his death. Obituaries published in late November 2010 stated that he had passed away on November 17, 2010, the same day he was last seen. A celebration of his life was held in Freeland on Whidbey Island on December 10, 2010, where family and friends gathered to remember a man described as having a soul "too tender for this earth." The missing person case, initiated to find him, is now closed, as he was regrettably located deceased. The community was left to mourn the loss of a gentle and scholarly man who had touched many lives with his kindness.
